Why I teach Combat Focus Shooting...
The thing I like most about CFS is that it doesn't try to fight nature. There are certain realities about how fights go down and how our bodies react to a lethal threat, and Combat Focus shooting acknowledges them. We study how attacks actually happen, how our bodies have evolved natural reactions to deal with threats, and from that combination we learn the best techniques and tactics to survive.
CFS is all about context - the context of the violent ambush attack. Other schools teach from the context of a shooting game or a military operation, but CFS teaches in the context of the kinds of attacks that you and I face on the street. Everything in the curriculum is aimed at surviving the brutal criminal attack, because what is efficient in the context of a target match or in a SWAT raid is not necessarily efficient in the face of a predatory ambush. CFS recognizes this and focuses solely on those techniques that work against the threats you and I are most likely to experience.
We don't often talk about evolution in defensive training, but it's one area where CFS is very different. We're always learning more about how fights actually happen, how criminals act, how bullets do their job, and how the mind and body respond to lethal threats. What we knew about those things just a couple of decades ago is vastly different than what we know today, but most defensive shooting instruction hasn’t kept up. Since it's based on science and observable evidence, CFS evolves and progresses as the body of knowledge grows. That makes CFS unique and keeps it on the cutting edge of self defense education.
